The race to produce long-lasting, quickly rechargeable, and economically cheaper lithium-ion batteries continue.

Note that among the challenges facing manufacturers of electric cars today were the longevity of batteries and the speed of their recharge.

Also, the race started in the field after three scientists were awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the year 2019 for having invented and developed the first “Li-ion” battery. Besides, researchers at Pennsylvania State University have announced that they have invented a new way to recharge electric car batteries in just ten minutes, thanks to the development of an advanced lithium-ion battery capable of charging more energy enough for a longer distance.

Indeed, the users of electric cars face certain problems that prevent the large adoption of this type of vehicle, in particular, what is called “anxiety of autonomy” which can be translated by the lack of sufficient energy to reach the destination. Add to that, the process of charging electric car batteries requiring more than an hour.

For its part, Tesla is working on a new battery that would be very efficient and cheaper. The battery will have a lifespan of about 1.6 million kilometers according to the company.

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, has repeatedly stated that great strides have been made in the development of battery technology.

Tesla is developing a battery that will have a lifespan of about 1.6 million kilometers.

Indeed, if current batteries suffer from internal stress undergone during charge and discharge cycles, the new batteries developed by Tesla in partnership with a Chinese company, would only use 20% of cobalt and another model is produced from lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP). Reducing cobalt in the manufacture of batteries should, therefore, reduce their cost. Consequently, this will bring the price level of electric cars to a level similar to that of petrol cars.

Apart from the trade war between the United States and China, Elon Musk estimates that the new battery will be sold in China by the end of 2020 or the beginning of 2021 and then in the rest of the world.
