Target retailer has said it will reduce opening hours or possibly close stores in the United States in response to riots that are spreading across the country over the deaths of George Floyd caused by Minneapolis police.

In fact, one of the Target stores has been vandalized following the recent events that occurred in Minnesota, Minneapolis, where Floyd, a victim of the police, lived. The demonstrations then started to protest against the shocking and ‘unjustified’ police action towards the 46-year-old man.

No less than 30 cities in the United States must have experienced demonstrations, some of which ended in overflows on both sides. Clashes then occurred between protesters and the police on one side and between groups of persons belonging to opposing camps.

Several incidents have stained manifestations such as the looting of retail stores and the vandalization of several buildings without forgetting the fires.

The Target Lake store in Minneapolis was seriously damaged.

Brian Cornell, CEO of Target (TGT), declared that he was frustrated with the turn of the situation and lamented “horrible” scenes on his terms. In light of the latest events, Target then announced via several press releases the decision to temporarily close some of its stores and to modify the opening hours in others.

Concerned stores are:

  • Broadway Oakland, CA
  • Buckhead South Atlanta, GA
  • South Loop Chicago, IL
  • Lake Street Minneapolis, MN
  • Uptown Minneapolis, MN
  • Washington Square W Philadelphia, PA

The company, which owns approximately 1,880 stores across the United States, has been particularly affected by the incidents which are igniting the country and ensuring that its employees will receive their remuneration according to the standards indicated in the press release.

Target stated in its press release:” Team members are receiving direct communications updates from leaders regarding any store impact where they work. Additionally, team members impacted by store closures will be paid for up to 14 days of scheduled hours during store closures, including COVID-19 premium pay. They will also be able to work at other nearby Target locations.”

These incidents worsen the economic situation, which has been severely affected by the Coronavirus pandemic. Indeed, the retail sector was among the most affected and which led to the bankruptcy of several brands such as Storage.
